SOLDBUCH & WEHRPASS GROUP & PHOTOS Inf. Ert. Batl. 406) 1940-45

A Nice group to one soldier, and this soldier saw a lot of action! He was all over the place in his five years in the war, He won the Iron Cross Second Class and some others we can't make out. Was wounded, etc, he has almost two pages completely filled with the different designated units he was with between 1940-44.

He starts in the summer of 1940 in the 4/F.R.F.R 201, feldrek. Battallion 406. His last entry in Oct 1944 shows him in a motorized unit, the San. Komp (mot) 1/592, Page 25 of his wehrpass indicates he received special instructions on spying, sabotage, safeguarding of official secrets, etc, and page 32 reveals 4 different combat actions he participated in , one is from August 1942 through April of 1944-! (16 months), before that, he was used in security actions within the General Government (probably Partisan operations).

From Dec 1944 through May 8, 1945, he was defending the Homeland. His last entry (in several places in both books), is May 8, 1945.

There is an additional ID card inside his Soldbuch from the German Red Cross-Wehrmacht des deutsches Reich which identifies him as a wounded man that should be given the considerations outlined in articles 9,12 and 13 of the Geneva Convention, and is dated May 7, 1943, there are also papers issued to him by Allied forces, starting May 5, 1945, and include : His Entlassungsschein (Official certificate of Discharge from the Army), 2 copies of his Abstelluntersuchung (no need to be investigated), and a U.S. Head quarters travel pass into the Russian Zone in Berlin (dated Jan 1946).

There are also 5 photographs which were inside the id booklets, 3 of which are captioned on back with dates. These candid photos bring a rare visual image to the story behind the entries in his service record, and they show the man himself, with his wife back home (above), his battle comrades, his commanding officers, his unit resting for a moment on the long march to the front, and the simple pleasure of a hot meal.
