Mounted Wehrmacht 4 year and 12 year Long Service Medals
A
year after the reinstitution of the draft Germany reinstated the Long
Service Awards (March 16th, 1936). All members of the Armed Forces were
eligible for the award which was bestowed in five classes; four years,
twelve years, eighteen years, twenty five years and fifty years. The
four year service medal was mat silver and had on the obverse the
Wehrmacht Eagle and the inscription "Treue Diesnste in der Wehrmacht"
(Loyal Service in the Armed Forces). On the reverse it bore only the
number 4 in the centre surrounded by oak leaves, in bronze, and with the
number "12" replacing the "4" on the reverse.

AK-39 Nr. FL23235-1 Luftwaffe wrist compass
Original WWII German AK-39 Manufactured by Kadlek for the German Air Force
Ministry Contract Nr. FL23235-1. The leather wrist band is very good
condition. Worn by Luftwaffe Navigators this is the companion piece to the
Luftwaffe Observers Watch Laco-Durowe. The compass together with the Luftwaffe
Observer watch would have been supplied shortly before a flying mission at
which time the airman signed for their receipts on an inventory sheet. After
the mission was completed the airman would return to base and hand back the
watch and the compass to stores possibly after debriefing.

Original Luftwaffe ID-disc & Leather pouch
Measuring 7cm
across German Army discs (Erkennungsmarke) were initially made of aluminium but
as the war progressed this became harder to come by. From around 1941 discs were
also produced in zinc or other pot metals were used. As one might expect the
material a disc is produced in will not necessarily lead one to conclude that
the inscription relates to an early disc, if aluminium or a late disc if in zinc
or steel. A units ordnance section, it was this part of the company that was
usually responsible for stamping discs would very often keep blank spares, so it
is the details stamped onto the disc and not the disc itself which can often
tell us more about the wearer!
The disc was made
up of two halves, usually with identical details, unit, blood group and depot
roster number (Stammrollnummer) on each half. Regulations stated that discs
should be stamped with the roster number below the unit designation. In
practice, with the shape of the disc being oval. there are many exceptions to
this rule, as seen here.
In the event of a
soldier being killed the top half was buried with the body, the bottom half
returned to Company HQ for their records. The first three discs shown are zinc.
The sixth one is alloy, and belonged to a soldier in Motorised Flak Battalion
1/608. Blood group A Roster number 1, this low number could indicate the
commander of this unit.

2 Death Cards
Luftwaffe
The making of Death Cards was a
common practice, particularly for catholics in Germany during the 19th and 20th
century. When a person died the family would commission these cards to let
family and friends know of the death.
